What is Passion?

I characterise passion as the internal fire that powers your engine, that irrefutable drive to achieve what you set out to do, that insistent voice in your head that requires perfection, and what you genuinely care about in life. I have had several fleeting passions, writing, online poker… and now cookery. Tomorrow I set out to discover whether this is yet another fleeting passion, or one that takes deeper root and provides me with inspiration. I can’t do anything about it if it does, at least, not immediately. I have a job, commitments, and a life to lead at the moment which precludes me following my heart to a certain extent. Since I was 18, I’ve dreamt of owning my own business - more specifically, a restaurant / wine bar / club. Being in the food/wine industry would definitely help me achieve that long-term dream, but it’s a distant, faint hope that I dare not contemplate…

Luckily, I find something just as good as passion in my job when the pressure mounts and the stress builds, I have the ability to get motivated about getting a piece of work across the finish line and very enthusiastic about change management and the process of improvement/refinement. Unfortunately, this doesn’t translate to a feeling of contentment or satisfaction deriving from the end result, generally that’s when I begin to feel at loose ends again. This week saw me kick-start the project in my job that, if successful, would be a massive organisational paradigm shift in the way that they think about Reporting and Analytics, plus it would give me massive responsibilities (most likely entailing the hiring of staff and my promotion to executive manager status) and would really turn the business around in terms of future-proofing, impressing our shareholders and returning the best possible results for our chosen markets.

It’s not passion, but I can definitely do it well.
